Alexander Nikolaevich Bazhenov was born on 4th September 1835 at Gorodishche (now Penza Region, Russian Federation). His father was a college receptionist. From childhood, Alexander took part in home performances.
Alexander Nikolaevich studied at the Penza Institute for Nobles. During 1847-1854 he studied at the 1st Moscow gymnasium (after his family moved to Moscow). In 1859 he graduated from Moscow University.
After Alexander Nikolaevich graduated from the university, he worked as a teacher of Russian literature in Moscow Cadet School. Since 1859 he published articles about Moscow theatres in Saint Petersburg and Moscow newspapers and magazines.
