The basics of drawing studied at the House of Pioneers Bezhitsa. The teachers were V. Vlazneva and A. Maslenko. And then, after winning the competition of children's fine arts "Our homeland" in 1939 was admitted to the Moscow secondary art school, where he studied under the supervision of professors G. Shegalia, V. Pochitalova and S. Mikhailov.
In 1941, with the beginning of the war, he was evacuated to Sverdlovsk, where he worked as a striker of tank engines at Uralmash. After demobilization he entered Sverdlovsk Art School and a year later transferred to Moscow.
In 1945-1951 he studied at the Moscow State Art Institute named after V. Surikov, the workshop of professor G. Ryazhsky. During his studies at the Institute, he actively began to exhibit.
After graduation he was sent to Minsk, worked in the Union of artists of the BSSR.
In 1956 he moved to Podolsk, where he was elected as a member of the Board of the Moscow Regional Organization of the Artists Union of the RSFSR and in 1960 at the first congress of artists of the RSFSR - a member of the board of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR.
In 1976-1987- chairman of the board of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR. And from 1977 - the secretary of the Board of the USSR Art Union. In 1973 he was elected as a corresponding member of the USSR Art Academy and in 1978 - academician.
Lives and works in Moscow.
He is married and has a daughter.
