Alexey Ivanovich studied at 1st Moscow Gymnasium. He graduated from the historical and philological faculty of Moscow University (1878).
Alexey Ivanovich Sobolevskiy was an associate professor (1882), professor (1884)of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. He was a head of the Department of Russian Language and Literature of Saint Petersburg University (1888-1908). Later, a teacher at Moscow University, Moscow Archaeological Institute, at the Archival courses. Alexey Ivanovich headed the commission for the preparation of the Dictionary of the Old Russian Language (since 1925).
Alexey Ivanovich Sobolevskiy is the author of more than 450 publications, including many monographs. Issued in 7 volumes "Great Russian Folk Songs" (St. Petersburg, 1895-1902). He donated his book collection on Slavic literature and languages (about 10,000 copies) to the Scientific Library of Voronezh State University (1928).
Alexey Ivanovich took an active part in the activities of the Slavic movement and Russian nationalist and monarchist organizations. He was the head of the St. Petersburg Slavic Charity Society, one of the founders of the Orthodox Kamchatka Brotherhood, a member of the Russian Assembly, made speeches at monarchist congresses, in particular at the 2nd All-Russian Congress of Russian People in Moscow on April 6-12, 1906.
Alexey Ivanovich was one of the members -founders of the Russian Border Society, was a member of its Council and headed the Department of Public Organizations in the South-Western Territory and Ukraine. He saw a great danger in the gaining strength of the Ukrainian national movement and called for fighting attempts to create a separate from the Russian Ukrainian language and separate Ukrainians from the "all-Russian culture."
Alexey Ivanovich was also an active member of the Union of Russian People, chairman of the Moscow Spassky Department in St. Petersburg, a member of the General Council of the NRC and a fellow chairman. During the split of the NRC, he supported Dubrovin, and was removed from the Main Council. The monarchist views of Alexey Ivanovich caused discontent among the liberal professors and students, whom he criticized in his articles, opposing the politicization of educational institutions. He was accused of libel, sued and was acquitted. In Moscow for some time (since 1911) he headed the Union of Russian People.
