Alexey graduated from the History and Philology Department of Moscow University (1901) and drama courses of the Moscow Theater School (1906, course of Alexander Pavlovich Lensky).
Alexey Zhelyabuzhsky worked in the theaters of Kostroma, Saint Petersburg, Moscow. He was the main director of the theaters of Kursk (1918-1920), Vladivostok (1920-1923).
In 1928-1930, the actor and director of the Voronezh Drama Theater, played in the plays "Dictatorship", "Fiery Bridge", "Air Pie", "The Moon on the Left" and others.
He staged the performances "Armored Train 14-69" by Vsevolod Ivanov (together with Arnold Markovich Samarin-Volzhsky) and "The Fiery Bridge" by Boris Romashov (together with Georgy Shebuev). Alexey participated in the tours of the mobile theater (1929) in Liskinsky, Pavlovsky, Ostrogozhsky districts of the Central Chernozem region.
He lectured on the history of theater and aesthetics. Later he worked in Stalingrad, Sevastopol, Kerch, Moscow (1934-1939).
