Allan graduated from the University of London with an LL.B. (with honors) in 1974. In 1978 he received from Victoria University of Manchester his LL.M.
Allan was called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn in 1975. He worked as a sessional lecturer in law at York University, North York, from 1978 until 1980. He was a lecturer in law at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, United Kingdom, in 1980-1982. Thereafter he worked at York University as an assistant professor between 1982 and 1984, then as an associate professor from 1984 until 1988, and as a professor of law since 1988. Hutchinson worked as associate dean of Osgoode Hall Law School from 1994 to 1996, and later, in 2003, he was named Associate Dean (Research, Graduate Studies and External Relations). Professor Hutchinson is a legal theorist with an international reputation for his original and provocative writings. He was elected to the Royal Society of Canada in 2004 and named a Distinguished Research Professor by York University in 2006. As well as publishing in most of the common-law world’s leading law journals, he has written or edited many books.
Hutchinson was married to Jane Hutchinson, but they separated in 1989. He has 3 children: Katie, Emily, Rachel.
