From 1949 to 1951 Alva Ware Stewart attended Auburn University. In 1953 he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1960 Stewart obtained a Master of Science degree in library science from that university. In 1954 Alva received a Master of Arts degree in political science from Duke University.
From 1960 to 1964 Alva Ware Stewart was a head librarian at Methodist College (now Methodist University) in Fayetteville, North Carolina. From 1968 to 1970 he worked as a head librarian at North Carolina Wesleyan College. From 1971 to 1977 Stewart was an associate librarian at the College of William and Mary. From 1980 to 1993 Alva was a reference librarian at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.
In 1983 he served as a library consultant to the North Carolina League of Municipalities and to two church libraries in Greensboro, North Carolina. From 1997 to 2001 he was a state publicity chair for the North Carolina Federation of Square Dancing. Stewart published a book, College Football Stadiums: An Illustrated Guide to NCAA Division 1-A (2000).
His articles have been published in National Civic Review, Public Management, American City, Wilson Library Bulletin, North Carolina Libraries, Christian Century, Family Motor Coaching, Southern RV, Our State, Christian Science Monitor, and American Square Dance.

2000Alva Ware Stewart was interested in fund-raising for Hospice. In 2000 he began delivering meals to homes of senior citizens in Greensboro, North Carolina.

On October 23, 1965, Alva Ware Stewart married Barbara Jean Johnson. They have a daughter, Susan Jean. In 1982 they divorced. On September 14, 1985, he married Margaret R. Causey.
