(The ecosystems upon which human life depends for its exis...)
The ecosystems upon which human life depends for its existence are rapidly collapsing. This book confronts that frightening realization and explores the philosophical basis for a new ecological awareness (in German the Bewußtseinswandel) which could prevent modern technological civilization from destroying itself and the world. Contemporary works of German science fiction, from both the West and the former GDR, are examined for their ability to help initiate this lifesaving new perspective.

Amy Stapleton is an author of speculative fiction and a current resident of the "Rocket City" Huntsville, Alabama.
In 1993 she authored "Utopias for a Dying World: Contemporary German Science Fiction's Plea for a New Ecological Awareness", a comprehensive and comparative look at examples of German science-fiction literature that calls for awareness of the world’s ecological crisis. This book received a mixed review from Science Fiction Studies contributor Franz Rottensteiner, who questioned the reality of ecology as a prevailing theme in German science fiction.
Stapleton's recent works include the novel "On Astronaut Wings", a story of astronauts, aspirations, and a mysterious coin from the Mir space station, "Bitstream", a short tale of digital redemption set in a post-singularity world, and "Collective Illusion".
