He graduated from the Higher Naval School named M.Frunze (now St. Petersburg Naval Institute).
In 1952-1954 he served as naval officer-ship gunner, then worked in Kuntsevskiy Maritime club DOSAAF, was commander of a minesweeper at a rescue station on the Moscow River, later till 1965 worked as an engineer at the enterprises of Moscow.
The first story was published in 1965. In 1968, the magazine "New world" by A. Tvardovskiy announced his novel "Stepan Sergeich". It was twice rejected by censorship and then appeared in the magazine only in 1987. At the same time the magazine "Banner" published another novel - "Long shot" ("Mantsev Sea"). Since then, A. Azolskiy was a regular author for the "New world", "Friendship of Peoples", "Banner", "Continent". In 1997 for the Novella "The Cage" A. Azolskiy was awarded the Booker Prize. In addition, the publications of A. Azolskiy were noticed by the journals "Friendship of peoples" (1999) and "New world" (2000). Azolskiy was a member of the Soviet Writers Union, the Russian PEN center, a member of the International Association of Battle and Seascapes Writers. His novels and stories were translated into German, Polish, Estonian and Chinese. In critics it was noticed that Azolskiy has the ability to create an adventurous narrative on the material of the soviet era, his discovery of a new type of character - the heroic individuals, defending their right to live in a situation of escalated and provoked by the ideology absurd. There were parallels between Azolskiy’s prose and literature of the absurd, the works of Graham Green (Yevgeny Yermolin). Some popular movies and television series were taken based on the works of Azolskiy: "The Raider", "Forgotten", "Stepan Sergeich", "Unknown Pages from the Scout's Life". Azolskiy was writing and publishing until the end of life - in February issue of "The New World" in 2008 was published his story "Penult days".
