He graduated from the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I.E. Repin of the USSR Academy of Arts in Leningrad (1955). From his youth he was fascinated by subjects related to the personality and work of Alexander Pushkin (his graduation work was the illustrations to the poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila").
Anatoly Ivanovich Zykov worked in painting, easel and book graphics. The participant of many national, all-union, international exhibitions. Personal exhibitions of Zykov's works were held in Moscow, Perm, Sverdlovsk, Tobolsk, Ryazan, Ulyanovsk, Lipetsk and other places. Zykov had repeatedly visited Voronezh on organizational and creative matters, particularly he participated in the opening of the exhibition of works by V.K. Fedyaevskaya (1994).
Since 1999 he had maintained creative connections with the Pushkin Museum at the district children's library of the village of Novaya Usman, Voronezh Region, where in December 2006 - February 2007 was held an exhibition of his graphic works devoted to the poet - "Through the Storms of Fate. Pushkin." Zykov gave speech to the residents of Nova Usman and presented several of his works to the museum.
