In 1959 he completed grade 10 of secondary school of an urban locality Enem. Then he studied at Kachinsk Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots after A.F. Myasnikov and at Gagarin Air Force Academy on a speciality «Command and Stuff Aviation».
Before enrollment in Cosmonaut Corps he was a turner of the «Neftemach» plant in Novocherkassk. He started his pilot career as a pilot-instructor of Kachinsk Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots. He joined Cosmonaut Corps in 1970. In 1982 he made a space flight as a commander of 1st principal expedition on the spacecraft «Soyuz T-5» and space station «Salyut-7». In 1992 he was out of Cosmonaut Corps after being dismissed by Armed Forces for retirement.
From May 13 to December 10, 1982 he was a commander of 1st principal expedition on the spacecraft «Soyuz T-5» and space station «Salyut-7» with V. Lebedev. Aboard the station he worked with Soviet-French crew including V. Dzhanibekov, A. Ivanchenkov and J.-L. Chrétien (France) and visiting crew including L. Popov, A. Serebrov and C. Savitskaya. Mission duration: 211 days 09 hours 04 minutes 32 seconds. Call sign: «Elbrus».
He was married, he had two children.
