He graduated from Voronezh State University, faculty of history in 1964.
Anatoly Vinnikov was a secretary of the Leninist Young Communist League, a teacher at the vocational school № 4 in Voronezh from 1964 to 1965.
Since 1966 he was a laboratory assistant, since 1973 a teacher of the Department of History of the USSR of the pre-Soviet period of Voronezh State University. Since 1994 he was a head of the department of medieval history and foreign Slavic peoples of Voronezh State University, dean of the faculty of history of Voronezh State University from 1995 to 2006.
He is a science editor of "Historical notes" (Scientific works of the faculty of history, Voronezh State University) (editions 1-9).
