Andonis Decavalles was born on January 25, 1920, in Alexandria, Egypt. He is a son of George Andónis Manganaris and Maria Decaválles.
In 1947 Andonis Decavalles received a Master of Laws degree from the National University Athens (now the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens). In 1957 he obtained a Master of Arts degree from Northwestern University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1960.
From 1948 to 1954 Andonis Decavalles was an attorney in Athens, Greece. From 1950 to 1954 he worked as a staff member for Radio Athens. In 1954 he immigrated to the United States. From 1958 to 1959 Decavalles was a visiting lecturer in English at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
In 1960 he was a lecturer at the City College of New York. From 1960 to 1961 he served as a lecturer in classics at Brooklyn College and New York University. In 1960 he was a temporary consultant at the Library of Congress. He began as assistant professor, became associate professor, then professor of English and composition at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Rutherford, New Jersey, from 1969 to 1992.
He is the author of T.S. Eliot: Ta Tessera Kouartet (1953), The Voice of Cyprus: An Anthology of Cypriot Literature (1965), Okeanidhes (Oceanids, 1970), Armoi, Karavia, Lytra (title means "Joints, Ships, Ransoms", 1976), Pandelis Prevelakis and the Value of a Heritage (1981), Ransoms to Time: Selected Poems (1985), etc.
