Studied at North London Collegiate School. Wadham College, Oxford. Master of Arts(Professor Hoffmann).
Barrister Lincoln’s Inn, 1861. Practised until 1876. On staff of Saturday Review, under J. Douglas Cook.
Contributor to Chambers’ Journal, the Cornhill, Temple Bar, London Society, Saint Paul’s, and many othei serials.
Took up conjuring as a hobby, and in 1876, under nom dc plume of Professor Hoffmann, produced Modern Magic, the first English book of any importance on the subject. The popularity of this book led to the production of others, as below. Author, editor, journalist.
