Narayan began her career as a coordinator of projects at Concern India Foundation in 2001. The same year she became a graduate assistant at the University of Connecticut. Then in 2006 Anjana became an assistant professor at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Nowadays she is a social work professor at the same university.
Narayan is a member of International Sociological Association and American Sociological Association.
On July 6, 2003 Anjana Narayan married Shashi Rajagopalan.
