Setlow received a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from Swarthmore College in 1964. Five years later he was given a Doctor of Philosophy degree in biochemistry from Brandeis University.
Setlow began his career as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine in 1968. Three years later he took a position of an assistant professor of biochemistry at the University of Connecticut Health Center. In 1977, Peter was appointed an associate professor at the same center. Since 1983 he has been a professor of Molecular Biology and Biophysics Department at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
Setlow is known for his research, which focused on spore formers of various Bacillus species, concentrating on the mechanisms of the formation, resistance, killing and germination of the spores of these organisms, as well as their biochemical properties and he has published over 400 research papers on these topics.
Setlow is a member of American Society for Microbiology and American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor at the University of Connecticut Health Center.
On July 10, 1965 Peter Setlow married Barbara Setlow (Cunningham). They have 2 children.
