Annette Barbara Weiner was born on February 14, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.
A 1968 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Weiner received her doctorate degree from Bryn Mawr College in 1974.
Weiner closely followed the work of anthropological pioneer Bronislav Malinovski by studying the people of Trobriand and other Asian and Pacific Rim cultures. She was an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Texas until joining the faculty at New York University in 1981 as chairwoman of the anthropology department. She eventually became dean of the graduate school of arts and sciences there.
She was also an editor of Reality and the Camera: Essays in Ethnographic Film Theory: A Comparative Model of Reproduction in the Pacific, and Cloth and Human Experience (1989).
Weiner made a name in the 1970s for her studies into the culture of the aboriginal people of the Trobriand Islands in the southwest Pacific. She detailed her work in the 1976 book Women of Value, Men of Renown: New Perspectives in Trobriand Exchange.
Weiner also wrote The Trobriand Islanders of Papua New Guinea (1989), Bilan du Film Ethnographique (1991), Inalienable Possessions: The Paradox of Keeping-While-Giving (1992), and was a contributor to Women in History: Studies in the Colonization of Precapitalist Societies (1979), New Perspectives on the Kula (1980), and Sexual Meaning.
