Anthony Gaillard is an Australian lawyer based in Melbourne, Victoria. He was admitted to the bar in Victoria in 1986, worked as a partner of the law firm Westgarth Middletons, and holds Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degrees from the University of Melbourne.
Education
Anthony Gaillard studied at the University of Melbourne, where he completed a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws with Honours. The university was established by an act of the Victorian Parliament in 1853 during the gold rush era, and it is Australia's second-oldest university and the oldest in Victoria.
Legal studies were part of the university from its early years. Instruction in law began in 1857, and a Faculty of Law was formally created in 1873, when the university council separated law from arts, the two having previously been closely associated. The Bachelor of Laws with Honours was therefore awarded within a faculty that had developed alongside the university's first subjects.
The university first offered a liberal arts course, and schools of engineering, medicine and music were added in the following decades. Its original buildings, now known as the Law School Building and Old Quadrangle, were constructed from 1854 to 1857.
Career
Gaillard was admitted to the bar in Victoria in 1986. He worked as a partner of Westgarth Middletons, a law firm with a Melbourne office.
Westgarth Middletons was formed when two medium-sized law firms, Westgarth Baldick of Sydney and Middletons Oswald Burt of Melbourne, merged to create a firm expected to rank among Australia's leading practices. Both predecessor firms had been founded in the 1870s. Westgarth was best known for building and construction work, while Middletons focused on the transport industry, with a strong emphasis on shipping.
In 1991, Westgarth Middletons of Sydney became one of three firms that merged to form Corrs Chambers Westgarth, an Australian commercial law firm. Corrs traces its origins to Whiting and Byrne, a Melbourne law firm formed in 1841.
