Je vous prie de croire, Mon cher Lecteur, que quand j'ay conçû le dessein de ce grand Ouvrage dont voici un petit essay, ce n'a point été pour entreprendre sur le travail de l'Academie Françoise; je la respecte autant qu'il est possible, & j'ay crû seulement contribuer de ma part au dessein qu'elle a de rendre service au Public. Deux considérations m'y ont obligé, l'une qu'elle n'a pas compris dans son Ouvrage les mots des Arts & des Sciences; ainsi j'ay crû qu'elle ne trouveroit point mauvais que quelqu'un en fît le Supplément. L'autre, que pour satisfaire l'impatience de plusieurs personnes, il étoit nécessaire de leur donner un Dictionaire qui n'est pour ainsi dire que provisionel, & le précurseur de celui qui viendra en Souverain dans une entiére pureté juger tous les mots vieux & nouveaux, & interposer son autorité pour les faire valoir; je lui laisse sa jurisdiction toute entiére, & ne prétens rien décider sur la Langue. Je lui offre cet Ouvrage comme de simples mémoires qui lui pourront servir pour achever la derniére partie de son travail, & pour remplir les omissions de la premiére. Cependant j'ay appris que quelques-uns prétendent revendiquer quelques phrases communes, figurées & proverbiales qui ne sont ici employées que par nécessité pour servir de passage & de liaison, ou pour arrondir le globe de cette Encyclopedie de la langue que je me suis proposée. Je ne les employe que comme on fait le ciment pour lier les pierres d'un grand édifice, & je prétens n'avoir rien emprunté du Dictionaire de l'Academie, ni de ce qui lui peut appartenir en propre. Le seul moyen de faire connoître cette verité, c'est la conference de ces deux Dictionaires, ou du moins d'un semblable Essay. Le Public en sera le juge, du moins on ne peut pas me reprocher d'en avoir rien pris depuis les lettres O & P qui ne sont pas encore faites. L'uniformité qui est en tout mon Ouvrage fera voir clairement que je n'ay pas eu besoin du Dictionaire de l'Academie pour faire les premiéres lettres, puisque sans son secours j'ay bien fait les derniéres; celles-ci pourront donner un beau champ pour exercer un droit de represailles, s'il y avoit lieu, puisqu'on y trouvera bien plus à prendre que ce qu'on pourroit prétendre que j'aurois pris. J'espere néanmoins que la seule vûë de ces deux Dictionaires fera paroître tant de difference entre l'un & l'autre, que ceux qui se donneront la peine d'en faire la conference trouveront que celui-ci n'a aucun rapport avec celui de l'Academie.

He studied law and deeply mastered the ancient culture.
In 1645 he received the position of attorney and economist of the Parisian abbey Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Then he became a cleric, and was appointed Abbot of the Abbey of Shalivua (near Bourges). In 1653 he published a poetic polemical treatise "The Journey of Mercury" (Le Voyage de Mercure); in 1655 - a collection of "Various poems" (Poesies diverses), which dominated the genre of satire. An interesting document of the literary struggle of the XVII century is the Allegorical Tale, or the History of the Recent Troubles in the Kingdom of Eloquence (Nouvelle allegorique, ou Histoire des derniers troubles arrives au Royaume d'Eloquence, 1658). In 1662 he was elected a member of the French Academy; in 1684 began his long struggle with the Academy around the project of the Dictionary of the French language. Furetiere decided to release such a dictionary by himself, although in 1674 the Academy received a privilege on it. In 1685 accused of plagiarism, Furetiere was expelled from the Academy. His "Universal Dictionary, containing all the words of the French language, both old and new" (Dictionnaire universel, contenant tous les mots francais, tant vieux que modernes) was release only posthumously, in 1690.
But the most famous work of Furetiere is still not the Universal Dictionary, but the Le Roman bourgeois (1666; "The Bourgeois novel" or "The philistine novel"). He was released in the era of fascination with refined literature and was polemically pointed against it. Following Sorel, Furetiere presented a vivid picture of Parisian life in the 17th century, and the characters' relationship clearly parodies the situation of the novels of d'Urfa and Scuderi, as well as of Amadis Gali. The beginning of the book is a parody of the beginning of the "Aeneid" of Virgil. The action of the novel is closed by the native quarter of Furetiere (between the island of Cite and the Mountain of Genevieve), and its heroes are primarily bourgeois. In essence, the novel represents a burlesque transformation of the theme of love search.
