educator , physicist

Antonio Guirao, Spanish physicist, educator. Recipient award, Rotary Club, Valencia, 1992, 1994; fellow, University Murcia, 1995-1997, Spanish Ministry Education and Culture, 1999—2000.

Guirao, Antonio was born on August 18, 1971 in Cieza, Murcia, Spain. Son of Emilio Guirao and Josefina Pilera.

Master of Science in Physics, University Valencia, Spain, 1994. Doctor of Philosophy in Physics, University Murcia, Spain, 1998. Master of Science in Philosophy, University Murcia, Spain, 1999.

Predoctoral fellow Optical Laboratory University Murcia, 1995—1997, teacher assistant Optical Laboratory, 1997—1999, assistant professor, since 2001. Postdoctoral research associate Center Visual Science University Rochester, New York, 1999—2000.

  • Achievements include patents for method to improve the visual performance by correcting the eye's chromatic aberrations by means of contact lenses, or other optical elements, that include spectral apodizing filters. Patents pending for computational method to determine the eye's refractive error from wave aberration data and to design a customized aberration correction. Research in cause and localization of the aberrations (imperfections) in the eye: these are caused by both the cornea and the lens, which in young subjects have opposite patterns to compensate for each other.

Research in aging of the human eye: the eye's optics progressively deteriorates with age. Research in distribution of aberrations in the population: there is a large inter-subject variability in the optical quality of the eye, and no systematic pattern is present. Research in correction of the eyes aberrations: there are potential benefits if the eyes aberrations were corrected, however there is a number of factors that limit those benefits.
