(For millions of people, the great soprano Maria Callas (1...)
For millions of people, the great soprano Maria Callas (1923-1977) remains the focus of such unparalleled fascination that there is still no higher praise for singers than "…the best since Callas." In this biography, Callas' career is brought brilliantly to life, from her transformation from a chubby, painfully shy girl into a magnificent, celebrated soprano, to her conflict with her larger-than-life image.
(This landmark biography penetrates the barriers of legend...)
This landmark biography penetrates the barriers of legend to bring to full and intimate life a man whose burning passions - for painting, women, and ideas - were matched by a compulsion to invent reality in his life no less than in his art. Here is the tragic story of a man who, from his teenage passion for a gypsy boy to the chilling bitterness and betrayals of his old age, was unable to love and was driven to dominate and humiliate the women - and men - who fell under his hypnotic spell.

In the grand tradition of Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot and Downsize This! comes Arianna Huffington's outrageous and hilarious tour of what really goes on in the White House out of the public eye. Welcome to Arianna's excellent adventure: On the heels of a small donation made to the Democratic National Committee - the result of a lost bet - she's invited to spend three days, with access as full as an intern's, in the infamous Lincoln Bedroom.

Powerful and enlightening. How to Overthrow the Government is an impassioned call to arms from one of America's sharpest and most independent commentators. In its pages, Huffington breaks away from the party-line platitudes of Republicans and Democrats alike while challenging Americans to rise up and take back their government.

Who filled the trough? Who set the table at the banquet of greed? How has it been possible for corporate pigs to gorge themselves on grossly inflated pay packages and heaping helpings of stock options while the average American struggles to make do with their leftovers? Provocative political commentator Arianna Huffington yanks back the curtain on the unholy alliance of CEOs, politicians, lobbyists, and Wall Street bankers who have shown a brutal disregard for those in the office cubicles and on the factory floors.

A scathing critique of the American political system looks at how America's political leaders on a state and national level have cheated and deceived voters and how political corruption has disenfranchised Americans of all political beliefs.

(Author, syndicated columnist, occasional actress, and bus...)
Author, syndicated columnist, occasional actress, and businesswoman Ariana Huffington examines the ways in which fear affects the lives of women, and the steps anyone can take to conquer fear. Observing that her own teenage daughters were beginning to experience some of the same fears that had once burdened her - How attractive am I? Do people like me? Do I dare speak up? - Arianna Huffington was compelled to look at the subject and impact of fear.
(With her trademark passion, intelligence, and devastating...)
With her trademark passion, intelligence, and devastating wit, Huffington Post editor in chief Arianna Huffington tackles the issues that are crucial to this year’s presidential election and, even more so, to the fate of the country. Huffington makes the case that America has been hijacked from within by a radical element - the "lunatic fringe" of the Right that has taken over the Republican Party.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that middle-class Americans are an endangered species and that the American Dream of a secure, comfortable standard of living has become as outdated as an Edsel with an eight-track player. That the United States of America is in danger of becoming a third world nation. The evidence is all around us.

(In Thrive, Arianna Huffington makes an impassioned and co...)
In Thrive, Arianna Huffington makes an impassioned and compelling case for the need to redefine what it means to be successful in today's world. Arianna Huffington's personal wake-up call came in the form of a broken cheekbone and a nasty gash over her eye - the result of a fall brought on by exhaustion and lack of sleep. As the co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group - one of the fastest-growing media companies in the world - celebrated as one of the world's most influential women and gracing the covers of magazines, she was, by any traditional measure, extraordinarily successful.
The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night at a Time
(Co-founder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post Ari...)
Co-founder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post Arianna Huffington shows how our cultural dismissal of sleep as time wasted compromises our health and our decision-making and undermines our work lives, our personal lives - and even our sex lives in this New York Times bestseller. We are in the midst of a sleep deprivation crisis, with profound consequences to our health, our job performance, our relationships, and our happiness. What we need is nothing short of a sleep revolution: only by renewing our relationship with sleep can we take back control of our lives.
Arianna Huffington is a Greek-American philanthropist and businesswoman. She is also a prolific author and international media mogul who started the award-winning news platform The Huffington Post, independently liberal online news magazine.
Background
Arianna Huffington was born on July 15, 1950, Athens, Greece, to a journalist and management consultant Konstantinos and his wife Elli Stasinopoulos. Though she was close to her father, it was the relationship she shared with her mother that shaped her life.
Arianna Huffington became a naturalized American citizen in 1990.
Education
During her formative years, Huffington exhibited leadership skills for which she is still well-known. At sixteen, Arianna moved to England to attend Girton College at Cambridge University where she got a Master of Arts degree in Economics. In 1971, she became the President of the Cambridge Union Society, a highly-recognized debating society, and became the first foreign and third female president.
After her graduation, Arianna worked as a columnist, critic, and television host. She also appeared in an edition of Face the music along with Bernard Levin and began writing books taking editorial help from him. In 1974, with Random House, she published her first book, The Female Woman, which looks at and critiques certain trends in women's liberation movements. The book was a sensation and it questioned many early strains of the feminist movement. It brought her a considerable amount of fame and success.
In 1978, she came out with her second book, After Reason which showed the failure of Western society to satisfy the basic spiritual needs of man due to the emergence of materialism. The book didn’t receive the expected response from the public, so she began working for the British editions of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, and newspapers such as Daily Mail and The Spectator.
Stassinopoulus moved to the United States in 1980. The following year, she released an acclaimed biography of one of the world's opera greats, Maria Callas: The Woman Behind the Legend. The book sold extremely well and made her a big hit in the city and this recognition introduced her to the city’s social elite.
Huffington started her political and journalistic career as a Republican and a proponent of small government and limited welfare. She contributed to the conservative journal National Review, and in 1994 she worked on her husband’s unsuccessful campaign for a United States Senate seat.
Huffington was initially known for her conservative political views and commentary, and she made regular television appearances to support her standpoints. But she eventually began to embrace more left-leaning platforms, including ecological activism and corporate reform.
In 2003, she had a New York Times bestseller: Pigs at the Trough: How Corporate Greed and Political Corruption are Undermining America. In 2005, Huffington launched the online site The Huffington Post, co-founding the platform with Kenneth Lerer and becoming its editor-in-chief. The site was initially known for its blogging, liberal punditry and news aggregation, a rebuttal to right-leaning aggregation sites such as The Drudge Report.
Over the years, however, it has grown to cover a wide range of media categories, from politics to sports to business, to name a few. By 2008, The Observer ranked The Huffington Post as the most powerful blog in the world. While the Web site took off, Huffington continued to write books as well, and in 2007 she released On Becoming Fearless ... in Love, Work, and Life, which would later become the inspiration for a 2013 Huffington Post blog series.
In March 2011 AOL acquired The Huffington Post for $315 million. Huffington became president and editor in chief of The Huffington Post Media Group, a new venture that included all the content from the Web site and AOL.
Huffington's 13th book, Third World America: How Our Politicians Are Abandoning the Middle Class and Betraying the American Dream, was released in 2010, and her 14th, Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder was published in 2014, debuting at number one on the New York Times Bestseller list.
In August 2016, Huffington announced that she would be leaving The Huffington Post after 11 years to launch Thrive Global, a start-up company and digital platform dedicated to health and wellness.
Huffington started her political and journalistic career as a Republican and a proponent of small government and limited welfare. She contributed to the conservative journal National Review, and in 1994 she worked on her husband’s unsuccessful campaign for a United States Senate seat.
In her coverage of the 1996 presidential election for the cable network Comedy Central, she was positioned as a conservative foil to lifelong Democrat Al Franken. For a time Huffington also wrote for the TV show Politically Incorrect, which was hosted by Bill Maher. In the late 1990s, however, Huffington’s place on the political spectrum began to shift to the left, starting with her opposition to United States intervention in the civil wars in the former Yugoslavia.
In 2003, Huffington ran on the Independent ticket against Arnold Schwarzenegger for the California governorship, but she withdrew from campaigning to throw her support behind thwarting the recall vote aimed at Governor Gray Davis.
Since 2004, Arianna Huffington is a member of the Democratic Party.
Views
In 2003, Arianna Huffington founded the Detroit Project along with three other people for lobbying American automakers to build cars and SUVs that have higher fuel efficiency and use alternative fuels. Huffington stepped away from her namesake Huffington Post to found the health and wellness startup Thrive Global, of which she also serves as CEO. Thrive Global launched in November 2016 and has raised over $43 million in funding to date.
Quotations:
"When your house is burning down, you don't worry about the remodeling."
"Our current obsession with creativity is the result of our continued striving for immortality in an era when most people no longer believe in an afterlife."
"Women are the carriers of society’s values ... men are deviant in the sense that many of the qualities admired in them are also one’s that society has to regard with disapproval ... Women’s Lib portrays society and morality as a male invention to coerce and punish women ... [yet] women are a virtuous group seeking to impose their moral standards on men."
"We need to accept that we won't always make the right decisions - understanding that failure is not the opposite of success, it's part of success."

Personality
Huffington can sleep anywhere and gets eight hours of sleep a night, 95 percent of the time. She got a sleeping problem in 2007 when she collapsed from exhaustion. She has since made a good night's rest a top priority and encourages employees at the Huffington Post to sleep on the job and nap in the company’s sleep pods.
Huffington also suffered a facial injury in 2007 after fainting in her office. Since then, she has pushed a platform of individuals maintaining a balance between work, good health, and life/enjoyment and has positioned the work/life balance as an important reform for companies to place at the forefront of their culture.
