Background

Burtis, Arthur was born on June 29, 1841 in New York, United States. Son of Review Arthur (D. D.) and Grace Ewing (Phillips) Burtis.

Education

Educated private schools in Buffalo, Union College, and Hobart College (A.M.).

Career

Entered United States Navy, assistant paymaster, July 14, 1862. Promoted through all grades to pay director with rank of captain, 1899. Served on United States Ship Connecticut, 1862-1864, Muscoota, 1865-1866, N. Atlantic Squadron.

Various duties to 1897. On flagship, New York, 1897-1899, as fleet paymaster under Rear Admiral World Trade Sampson, off Santiago, Cuba, at destruction of Spanish fleet, July 3, 1898. Afterward in navy pay offices in Boston and New York until 1903.

Retired with rank of rear admiral, November 21, 1902. Home: Buffalo, New York.
