Sinsabaugh received a BS in 1949 from the Institute of Design, Chicago, Illinois. He later took an MS (1967) from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago.
In 1980s Sinsabaugh was head of the photography program at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, where he has taught since 1959. He became a professor there in 1969, and headed the Department of Photography and Cinematography from 1959 to 1977. The photographer founded and co-directed Visual Research Laboratory (1974-78). He was a visiting artist at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts (1973), University of New Hampshire, Durham (1968), and University of Oregon, Eugene (1964). He taught at the Institute of Design of the Illinois Institute of Technology from 1949 to 1959. In 1943-46 Sinsabaugh served with the U.S. Army Air Corps, and in 1942-43 he was a photographer for the War Department.
