Arthur Schmidt was born on September 30, 1943, in San Luis Obispo, California, United States. He is a son of Arthur Schmidt and Rita (Wetmore) Schmidt.
In 1965, Arthur received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University. During the period from 1965 till 1966, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
In 1966, Arthur enrolled at Indiana University Bloomington, graduating with a Master of Arts degree in 1967. In 1973, he got a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the same university.
In 1971, Arthur began his career as an instructor at Temple University, Philadelphia, a post he held till 1973, when he was appointed an assistant professor at the same university. Schmidt held the position of an assistant professor till 1983, when he was promoted to the post of an associate professor of history.
Arthur also worked as a director of the Latin American Studies Center, as well as a director of the Urban Studies Program, at Temple University. Moreover, he held a post of a chair of the Board of Temple University Press.
Schmidt took part in the conference on Latin American History and acted as a member of the Middle Atlantic Council of Latin American Studies. Moreover, he served as an international observer in three different contexts: in refugee camps in Honduras in 1982, 1988 and 1989; in the Nicaraguan and Salvadoran elections of 1990 and 1994 respectively; and in post-electoral settings in Mexico City and Chiapas in 1994 and 1995.
In 1991 and 1993, Arthur spent five weeks, giving workshops on global economic issues to university, business, labor and non-governmental organization audiences in El Salvador and Nicaragua for the American Friends Service Committee.
Moreover, Arthur lectured as a Commonwealth Speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council on historical trends in immigration and the world economy and taught courses at St. Joseph’s University, Swarthmore College and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Currently, Schmidt is a Professor Emeritus of History at Temple University.
