(Seasoned musician Jackson Maine discovers-and falls in lo...)
Seasoned musician Jackson Maine discovers-and falls in love with-struggling artist Ally. She has just about given up on her dream as a singer until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight.
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, who is popularly known by her alias, Halsey, is an American pop artist and songwriter. Her singing career began in 2012 with a parody of the Taylor Swift song named ‘I Knew You Were Trouble.’
Background
Ethnicity:
Halsey is of mixed ethnicity. Her father is of African-American descent while her mother of Italian, Irish as well as Hungarian heritage.
Halsey was born as Ashley Nicolette Frangipane in Clark, New Jersey, on September 29, 1994, to the family of Nicole and Chris Frangipane. Her parents dropped out of college after her mother discovered that she was pregnant with her. Her mother works for security in a hospital, and her father manages a car dealership. Halsey has two brothers, Dante and Sevian.
Halsey is an anagram of her name Ashley and a street in Brooklyn where she spent most of her free time growing up.
Education
Halsey started in classical music by playing the viola, cello, and violin before picking up the acoustic guitar and age 14. The 2012 graduate of Warren Hills Regional High School, she also briefly studied at Rhode Island School of Design before transferring to community college and subsequently dropping out.
During her high-school years, Halsey was a victim of bullying, and at 17 she tried to commit suicide, which resulted in a 17-day hospitalization. Following this, she was diagnosed as bipolar; her mother also suffers from the same disorder.
After a storied youth, Halsey used music as a therapeutic outlet. While performing acoustic sets, she assumed numerous stage names before settling on Halsey as a nod to her birth name and place. After years of writing poetry, a chance meeting with a producer set her on track for a collaboration of "Ghost." This nod to a former boyfriend earned her immediate online popularity and record label bids. With the offer of creative freedom, she settled with Astralwerks.
Halsey toured with the Koots in 2014 while creating her debut studio album and dating Norwegian producer Lido. That October, her ep "Room 93" dropped and charted in the Billboard Top 200. After taking the songs to South by Southwest in 2015, Halsey a co-headlined a tour with Young Rising Songs in March 2015. That June she opened for Imagine Dragons on their Smoke + Mirrors Tour in North America.
Halsey co-wrote every song on "Badlands," her debut studio album, which dropped August 28, 2015, which was a dystopian concept project. It opened at number two on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 chart and sold 97,000 copies within its first week. The project went on to be certified platinum. The project also debuted at number nine in the UK and generated four commercial singles that went on to be certified gold.
Also in 2015, Halsey was featured on Justin Bieber’s “The Feeling,” with charted in the Billboard Top 40. In May 2016, she released “Tokyo Narita (Freelstyle),” which former boyfriend Lido produced. The standalone song got her recognition while collaborating with The Chainsmokers on “Closer,” becoming both artists’ first Billboard Hot 100 hit. The single earned Halsey Best Pop Duo/Group Performance nomination for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.
In January 2017, Halsey released the digital single "Not Afraid Anymore," which was included in the “Fifty Shades Darker" soundtrack. That June, Halsey’s more commercial second studio album, “Hopeless Fountain Kingdom,” dropped. The concept project, "Hopeless Fountain Kingdom," centers on a Romeo and Juliet-like couple and was inspired by Halsey’s split from Lido. The project topped the Billboard 200 chart its first week of release and generated the "Now or Never" single, which hit number 17 on Billboard’s Hot 100. It was followed by "Bad At Love," which went to number five.
Her H3 era began on May 2, 2019, when she archived all of her photos on Instagram, posted three black squares and changed her profile photo to black. Her website changed and became interactive and full of information on different types of nightmares to the questions her fans answered. The same day, Webster Hall announced 2 Halsey shows, stating that she would be performing Badlands and Hopeless Fountain Kingdom on May 8th and 9th. On May 3, she changed her profile photo to what would later be known as a behind the scenes photo on her upcoming music video. On May 11th, Halsey sent her fans to go and find lyrics to her single around their cities: Los Angeles, Dallas, Chicago, Bay Area, and New York City, they responded with photos of their findings. On May 17, 2019, she released a single called "Nightmare." The song is based on women being forced into a submissive role, and it became a very bold feminist anthem. The song was written by Halsey and produced by Benny Blanco, Cashmere Cat, and Happy Perez. The music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, accompanied its release the same day.
Halsey is not a religious person. She said so in an interview for friend and producer Benny Blanco's YouTube channel, where she claimed to believe in synchronicity instead. She told Blanco: "I was [religious] growing up. I was a youth pastor. I would like go and do youth group and stuff and Christian summer camps."
Politics
During the 2016 USA presidential election, Halsey was an avid supporter of Bernie Sanders and urged her fans to vote for him.
Views
Halsey is a self-proclaimed feminist and promotes awareness about social issues such as sexism, racism, mental illnesses.
Though her music is classified as pop on the charts, she called herself "the anti-popstar" in a January 2019 tweet. "Part of being an artist is that I can subscribe to whatever brand of myself I wish," she wrote. "Anti-popstar is more about a mentality I think. It has little to do with genre and more about denying the notion that female pop artists should succumb to the social expectations of the genre!"
Quotations:
"My brain is like a teleprompter and if I don’t speak fast enough the words are going to go away."
"So many people are concerned with being the perfect 'something.' Whether it's the perfect singer, the perfect sexy girl, or the perfect feminist. I don't want to be the perfect anything."
"The environment around you shapes who you are. How you handle an emergency or how you react when someone is rude to you, that's you."
"I wouldn't trivialize my existence into a hashtag."
"People are so afraid to talk about real things, but they're experiences that everyone goes through."
"I think, growing up in a small town - I grew up in a lot of different places. I grew up in a city environment, a more suburban environment, a more rural environment. That's the beauty of New Jersey is you get a lot of different types of living."
"The cool thing about my show and me is that I'm a writer, and I'm a writer first if I don't have music."
"You can be accessible without catering to an audience."
Personality
At 17, a suicide attempt - Halsey tried to overdose on painkillers, regretted it immediately and told her parents - brought about a 17-day stay in a psychiatric hospital, where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, something her mother has also struggled with. Afterwards, she began using recreational drugs.
In high school, someone broke into her locker during gym class, stole a topless photo she'd taken for her boyfriend and began passing it around the school. "Teachers saw it; everyone saw it. And suddenly, I was not the weird girl, I was the slut," she told RS. "I could have recoiled and deflected my sexuality, but instead I was like, 'I'm going to own it now.'"
Frangipane once described herself as "in-between role model," and an "inconvenient woman" due to her music and style. She also identifies herself as bisexual.
