In April-October 1843 with the permission of the tsarist government he made a long journey through the central provinces of Russia (including Tambov and Voronezh) with the purpose of studying the agrarian system of Russia, the way of life and economic activity of the peasants. The results of the study were published in Germany and Russia.
Defended a conservative view of the singularity of the communal life of the Russian peasantry, confirmed that the patriarchal foundations of the village served as a sturdy support for the autocracy and a barrier to the revolution in Russia.
