In September 1914, August Efimovich moved with his parents to Voronezh, where he graduated from the High School (the 1st gymnasium). He graduated from the directing department of the Theater Studio (Theater Institute) and in the summer of 1922 he moved to Moscow, where he studied at the Moscow Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History (MIFLI) (1931-1932).
Participant of the Civil and Great Patriotic wars. August Efimovich was an executive secretary of the editorial office of the newspaper "Voronezh commune" (October 1919).
