Aura Herzog was born in Egypt in a Jewish family originating in Russia and Poland, the daughter of Leah (Steinberg) and Simcha Ambache, an engineer.

Aura Herzog was educated in French schools in Ismaïlia, and later studied in South Africa, completing a Bachelor of Science degree in physics and mathematics. She graduated from School of Diplomats of Jewish Agency for Israel in 1947.
After graduating, Aura Herzog emigrated to Mandatory Palestine and joined the Haganah. During the Israeli War of Independence, she served as an officer in the Science Corps. She was wounded during the siege of Jerusalem.
In 1963 Herzog founded Kolnoa Lanoar. She established the "Council for a Beautiful Israel" in 1968 and serves as its international President. She wrote the first book of etiquette in Hebrew, "The Secrets of Hospitality", which was published in Israel. Her second book was "Maariv" (1971).
She also served as art critic for the Jewish Chronicle.
She initiated and established the Annual Bible Contest (1959), which has become an integral part of the tradition and culture of Israel and was a member of the Council of Culture and Art (1959–1968). Aura Herzog is a member of the board of trustees of the Tel Aviv Museum of Artist
She is the widow of Chaim Herzog, has three sons and one daughter.
