Ayushmann Khurrana was born on September 14, 1984, in Chandigarh, India, to Poonam and P. Khurrana. His father is an astrologer and an author on the subject of astrology, whereas his mother is a housewife and a qualified Master of Arts in Hindi. His brother Aparshakti Khurana is an actor and radio jockey at Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM. Khurrana's original name was Nishant, but his parents change it to Ayushmann when he was three years old.
The ambiance of literature at home influenced Khurrana as well and he took writing as a hobby.
Education
Khurrana studied at St. John's High School and DAV College in Chandigarh. He majored in English literature and has a master's degree in Mass Communication from the School of Communication Studies, Panjab University.
Khurrana did serious theatre for five years. He conceived and acted in street plays and won prizes in national college festivals such as Mood Indigo (IIT Bombay), OASIS (Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani) and St. Bedes Shimla. He was noticed on TV at the age of 17. It was the reality show on Channel V; PopStars in 2002. He was one of the youngest contestants on the show. Roadies took place in 2004 whereby he turned out to be the winner in Roadies 2 at the age of 20. After completing his graduation and post-graduation in Journalism, his first job was as an RJ at BIG FM, Delhi. He also hosted the show Big Chai - Maan Na Maan, Main Tera Ayushmann.
After radio, Khurrana moved on to become a video jockey on MTV with Pepsi MTV Wassup, The Voice of Youngistaan, an informative show for the youth. He also worked in many other MTV shows such as MTV Fully Faltoo Movies, Cheque De India and Jaadoo Ek Baar. He then turned television host with a multiple-talent based reality show India's Got Talent on Colors TV which he co-anchored with Nikhil Chinapa and Stripped which gave latest updates on the Indian TV industry with a comic tinge, again on MTV. At the end of the year, he was also the anchor of the singing reality show Music Ka Maha Muqqabla on STAR Plus.
Apart from hosting the second season of MTV Rock On and India's Got Talent on Colors, Khurrana was also a part of the anchoring team of Extra Innings T20 for Indian Premier League Season 3 on SET Max with Gaurav Kapur, Samir Kochhar, and Angad Bedi. Following which he took up the offer of anchoring the dance-based reality show Just Dance on STAR Plus.
Khurrana made his acting debut with Shoojit Sircar's romantic comedy Vicky Donor (2012) alongside another newcomer Yami Gautam. The film, which marked actor John Abraham's production debut, received mixed to positive reviews from critics and eventually proved to be a major commercial success with worldwide gross earnings of $9.3 million. For the film, he also sang a song Pani Da Rang for which he was the second composer. For his performance and singing, Khurrana received critical acclaim.
The following year, Khurrana collaborated with Kunaal Roy Kapur and Pooja Salvi on Rohan Sippy's Nautanki Saala! (2013), a comedy about a friendship between a artist and a man and how they face problems and solve them. He next played the lead role opposite Sonam Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor in Nupur Asthana's romantic comedy Bewakoofiyaan (2014). For the film, Khurrana also sang a song named Khamkhaan. However, both Nautanki Saala! and Bewakoofiyan were commercial failures, but his performances in both films were well received.
In 2015, Khurrana starred alongside Pallavi Sharda and Mithun Chakraborty in Vibhu Puri's Hawaizaada, the biopic of Shivkar Bapuji Talpade which he plays in it. The film received negative reviews and earned only $3.6 million worldwide, thus becoming Khurrana's third consecutive film to fail at the box office. This changed later that year when he starred opposite newcomer Bhumi Pednekar in the Sharat Katariya directed-romance Dum Laga Ke Haisha, which received positive reviews. The film had a worldwide gross of $4.4 million and was termed a super hit by box office. Khurrana's performance was also well received.
After a two-year hiatus, Khurrana returned to film acting in 2017 and starred in three romantic comedies, the first of which was Akshay Roy's directorial debut Meri Pyaari Bindu alongside Parineeti Chopra. It did not perform well commercially. Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari's comedy Bareilly Ki Barfi, co-starring Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Sanon, came next, and saw Khurrana portray a writer who writes a book named Bareilly Ki Barfi. The film received positive reviews and turned out to be a commercial success, earning over $7.9 million worldwide. Khurrana's third and final release of the year was R.S. Prasanna's Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, in which he played a Gurgaon guy who falls for Bhumi Pednekar's character. With a worldwide revenue of $9.3 million, the film was proved a financial success. He received praise for his performances in both the films.
Khurrana established himself with his two releases of 2018, both of which were among the top-grossing productions of the year. In Sriram Raghavan's Andhadhun, a black comedy thriller co-starring Radhika Apte and Tabu, he played Akash, a blind pianist who unwillingly becomes embroided for the murder of a former film actor. With critical acclaim directed towards his performance, the film was a critical and commercial success and proved to be one of Indian cinema's biggest grossers with a worldwide revenue of over $58 million, becoming his highest-grossing release. Khurrana's second release of 2018 was Amit Sharma's comedy-drama Badhaai Ho, a story about a middle-aged couple in which the wife gets pregnant much to the disapponitment of their elder son. The film eventually emerged as a major commercial success, grossing over $32 million worldwide.
As of 2019, Khurrana has five upcoming projects. He will portray a police officer in Anubhav Sinha's Article 15 (2019) and will feature in the romantic comedy Dream Girl (2019). He will also portray the eponymous protagonist in Amar Kaushik's comedy-drama Bala (2019), after which he will star in the romantic comedy Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020), a sequel to Shubh Mangal Saavdhan. Khurrana has also committed to reteam with Shoojit Sircar in the family comedy Gulabo Sitabo (2020), co-starring Amitabh Bachchan.
