Barbara McClintock was born on May 6, 1955, in Flemington, New Jersey, United States. She is a daughter of Earl Irving McClintock, a photographer, and Joann McClintock (maiden name Herigstad), a teacher and shop owner.
Barbara McClintock spent her early years in Clinton, New Jersey. Raised in a family of a photographer and teacher, she quickly developed an interest in drawing, sketching all the time. She also liked to invent stories, especially scary ones, which she shared with her siblings and friends. By the age of seven, Barbara made a strong decision to become a children's book illustrator in the future.
When McClintock was nine years old, her parents divorced and she relocated with her mother and sister to North Dakota. While there, she studied at Jamestown College (currently University of Jamestown) from 1973 to 1975. She continued her self-practice in drawing by creating replicas from school art books.
Later, in 1985, McClintock developed her skills at the Art Student's League in New York City under the illustrator John Groth. She also sketched in the museums of the city and then traveling to London, Paris, Saint Louis, Missouri, Vienna, and Lisbon.
Barbara McClintock started her career in New York City where she came at the age of twenty following the advice of Maurice Sendak, a notable illustrator. For some time, she made a living for herself and continued her art studies simultaneously.
Especially during the first years of her career, McClintock illustrated books written by other authors like ‘Potbellied Possums’ by Elizabeth Winthrop or James Duffy’s ‘Revolt of the Teddy Bears a May Gray Mystery’. Then, she got acquainted with Jim Henson who proposed her to illustrate the books for his television series Fraggle Rock.
During the late 1980s and throughout the 1990s Barbara McClintock has created books that showcased her skill as an illustrator and author. One of the first volumes she wrote and self-illustrated, ‘Heartaches of a French Cat’, was published by David R. Godine in 1988 after being rejected by 16 publishers. This wordless dummy book was inspired by a play based on a Balzac story he created for the 19th Century French illustrator J.J. Grandville. ‘Heartaches of a French Cat’ provided McClintock with critical acclaim.
The first success was followed by a great number of other writings for children that McClintock both wrote and illustrated or simply provided with her lushly detailed pen, ink and watercolor pictures, as ‘Animal Fables from Aesop’, and ‘A Child's Garden of Verses’ by Robert Louis Stevenson among others.
The recent book written and illustrated by McClintock is a 2017 volume ‘The Five Forms’. In addition to her writing activity and illustrations, the author and illustrator tours around the United States presenting her works in schools and libraries both to children and their parents.
