Barbara Sofer was born on April 13, 1949, in New London, Connecticut, United States. She is the daughter of Abraham and Adelaide (Lubchansky, present name Kahn) Slopak.
Sofer graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree in 1971 and received her master's degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1975. In addition, she studied writing and film at the New School of Social Research and Fiction Writing at the Harvard University Extension. She also completed the two-year forum in Zionist Leadership at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem.
Sofer started her career as an English teacher at Hebrew University High School in Jerusalem in 1971. She then went to Kibbutz Experimental School and has been a contributing editor at Hadassah Magazine for more than a decade.
Sofer currently holds the position of the Israel Director of Public Relations for Hadassah and writes a Friday column for The Jerusalem Post that deals with the challenges and miracles of everyday life in Israel, where she has moved from the United States 35 years ago.

1988Sofer is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, Hadassah and Keren Klitah. She is also a committed member of the Shira Hadasha, an egalitarian-Orthodox community and an informal spokesperson for Orthodox feminism.
Sofer is married to scientist and writer Gerald Schroeder. The couple has five children, Avi, Josh, Hadas, Yael and Hannah.
