Wachal received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Greenville College (nowadays Greenville University) in 1981. Sixteen years later she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the same college. In 2000, she was given a Master of Arts degree in English from St. Louis University.
Wachal began her career as an instructor of English at St. Louis University in 1997 and had held it for two years. In 2002, she took the same position at Southern Illinois University and at St. Louis Community College. Since 2004 Barbara has been an assistant professor of English at St. Louis Community College.

On June 5, 1982 Barbara Wachal married Roger Erwin Wachal. They have two children.
