KATZ, Sir Bernard (b 1911) German-born British neurophysiologist who left Germany in 1935 joined Archibald Hill (1886-1977) at University College, London and moved to the Kanematsu Institute at Sydney in 1938 to work with Sir John Carew Eccles (b 1903) and Stephen Kuffler (1913-1980). In 1946 he returned to University College worked on the chemical mechanism of neurotransmission, particularly acetylcholine. He shared the Nobel Prize in 1970 with Ulf Svante von Euler (1905-1983) and Julius Axelrod (b 1912) for his work on electrical impulse transmission from nerves to muscles. Katz published Electrical Excitation of Nerve in 1939
