Roger Reese was born on May 18, 1959 in Fort Knox, Kentucky, United States, into the family of Ronald R. and Carleen H. (Smith) Reese.
In 1981 Roger received Bachelor of Arts at Texas A&M University. After that he studied at University of Texas at Austin, where he earned Master of Artsin 1986 and Doctor of Philosophy in 1990.
After finishing his studying, Roger, returned to Texas A&M History Department as a member of staff in 1990. Dr. Reese currently specializes in Soviet social history in general, and the social history of the Soviet military in particular. Moreover, he has written four books on the Soviet military. His current research focus is on the Russian officer corps in the Late Imperial Period in general and in the First World War and revolutionary period in particular.
Roger is also a contributor of articles and reviews to periodicals, including Soviet Studies, Soviet and Post-Soviet Review, and Slavic Review.

On July 9, 1988 Roger married Alison Winslow, with whom he has three children: Emily, Alexander, and Helen Reese.
