Electrical engineering educator
Widrow, Bernard was born on December 24, 1929 in Norwich, Connecticut, United States.
Bachelor of Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1951; Master of Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1953; Doctor of Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1956.
He is the co-inventor of the Widrow–Hoff least mean squares filter (LMS) adaptive algorithm with his then doctoral student Ted Hoff. The LMS algorithm led to the ADALINE and MADALINE artificial neural networks and to the backpropagation technique. He made other fundamental contributions to the development of signal processing in the fields of geophysics, adaptive antennas, and adaptive filtering.
Fellow American Association for the Advancement of Science, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (Centennial medal 1984, Alexander Graham Bell medal1986). Member Tau Beta Pi.
