(In the twentieth century, the practice of psychology has ...)
In the twentieth century, the practice of psychology has usually been based on a scientific or objective theory of human behavior. Today, an influential countermovement, often called social constructionism, argues that there is no basis for our beliefs or values beyond the swirl of meanings and practices in a particular community or era. Re-envisioning Psychology examines the increasing dissatisfaction with both scientific and social constructionist viewpoints and presents a sweeping new vision of theory and practice in psychology.

(According to psychologist Blaine Fowers, the myth of mari...)
According to psychologist Blaine Fowers, the myth of marital happiness-that good communication, emotional gratification, and intimacy result in a healthy relationship-has made marriages more fragile than ever before and we must let it go. Does this mean that we should give up on love, satisfaction, intimacy, emotional support, good communication, and good sex in marriage? That marriage must be continued solely on the basis of grim commitment? That no one should divorce? Not at all. Instead, Dr. Fowers shows how we can re-envision marriage as a wonderful opportunity to practice the virtues of friendship, loyalty, generosity, and justice in the shared pursuit of our deepest ideals.

(Virtue and Psychology: Pursuing Excellence in Ordinary Pr...)
Virtue and Psychology: Pursuing Excellence in Ordinary Practices issues a clarion call for psychologists and other mental health professionals to recognize the reality of virtue in social interaction. Virtues are character strengths such as generosity, loyalty, and honesty-that make it possible for people to pursue worthwhile goals. The author explores the current terrain of psychology, a field that actively avoids discussion of virtue while it implicitly endorses values such as independence and mastery.

Positive psychology studies the strengths that enable individuals to thrive and is founded on the belief that people want to cultivate their best virtues and traits; that we want to enhance our lives by embracing our best selves. But we are imperfect creatures. How do we realize our best selves and flourish in the face of our frailty, vice, and suffering?
