Bunhachiro Shimakawa commanded the Third Field Artillery Regiment in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). He contributed much to the development of the Meiii 31st-Year type rapid-firing mountain gun. He was the first chief of the Weapons Bureau, War Office, and chief of the Army Technical Investigation Section.
He was later appointed chief of the Army Technical Headquarters.
