In 1967 Kowal received his Bachelor of Arts in the area of art and architectural history from the University of Illinois in Chicago, Illinois, the United States. In four years he became a Master of Science after graduating from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, the United States, where he studied with Aaron Siskind, Arthur Siegel, and Joe Jachna.
Since 1971 Cal is the head of the photography department at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Ohio, the United States. In 1975 Cal founded Rose/Pose Publishing, a press for limited-edition artists' books. He was a guest professor in the Architecture Department at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, in 1976-1978.
Kowal won an artist-in-residence grant from NEA in 1976 to work at the Light Work Gallery, Syracuse University, New York. Besides his personal photography, Kowal publishes small-press photography books and produces limited-edition portfolios of original photographs.
Kowal belongs to SPE, the Graphic Arts Society, Cincinnati Art Museum, and is on the board of trustees of the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati.
