Finkel earned a BA in English from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1968). She then studied at Columbia College in Chicago and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She received an MA in Speech Communication at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1980.
Finkel has been the photography editor of the New Art Examiner in Chicago since 1977, and has been a contributing editor of Exposure since 1976. She was Chicago correspondent for Afterimage: VSW (1977-79).
