This book treats the arts in panoramic fashion, describing and illustrating them type by type, and then shows what light the popularity of particular works cast on the American character of the time opens with the ante-bellum theater, ranging from melodrama to social comedy. Music, architecture, and interior decorating are examined next, followed by painting and sculpture. In the concluding section the author deals with works in print. The most popular works of the day are analyzed: the all pervading how to do it books, religious writings, the novel, poetry, the personal essay, travel literature, popular history, and the magazines of the period.
