(Designed as a supplement in courses on the psychology of ...)
Designed as a supplement in courses on the psychology of women, the psychology of gender, and gender-role development, this collection of short, accessible lectures, written by experienced and committed teachers, spotlights topics that often receive less in-depth coverage in core textbooks. While topically arranged to align with standard texts, each "favorite lecture" stands alone: essentially instructors can assign the readings to meet their own course needs. Among the student-friendly features are the informal writing styles, with each author speaking directly to the reader; questions and ideas that encourage critical thinking; and biographical statements and photographs that introduce each contributor. The authors represent a variety of personal backgrounds and experiences, but they believe in the importance of gender equality. To that point, the book addresses common feminist themes, including the social construction of gender, power, the value of diversity, inclusive language, the global status of women, and the value of social activism. (This unique book is a collection of previously unpublishe...)
This unique book is a collection of previously unpublished essays written for undergraduates by experienced teachers and leading experts in the field of Psychology of Women. These favorite lectures are designed as a reader to be paired with a Psychology of Women textbook. The lectures are written in an informal manner: the authors speak to students directly and on the student’s level and address questions that students often ask. The "lectures" cover key topics within the psychology of women course and the general women's studies curriculum. Some lectures describe the author’s personal experience; some present new data. All were prepared specifically for this book. Seven of the 24 lectures are new to this edition. The editors provide a preface addressed to both students and professors that explains how the book is intended to be used. The text also includes an introduction that discusses the philosophy and aims of feminist psychology, and how the book fits into that framework.
