Halford graduated from the University of New England with his B.A. (with honors) in 1961 and his M.A. in 1966. He received his Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Newcastle in 1969.
Halford worked at the University of Newcastle, Newcastle, Australia as a lecturer from 1965 until 1970, then as a senior lecturer in psychology from 1971 until 1972. Thereafter he was an associate professor of psychology at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario from 1972 till 1975. Halford also worked at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, as a senior lecturer from 1975 until 1979, as a reader in psychology between 1980 and 1989, and then became a professor of psychology since 1989. He is currently an Emeritus Professor of the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia.
Halford was a fellow of Academy Social Sciences in Australia (convenor Queensland branch 1986-1997), Australian Psychological Society, American Psychological Society. He was a member of Australasian Cognitive Science Society (president 1995-1997), Australian Academy of Sciences (national committee for psychology 1990-1996), Wynnum-Manly Yacht Club, University of Queensland Staff and Graduates Club.
Halford married Joan Margaret Hough in1967, but they divorced in 1975. The couple had children: Ross (deceased), Rowena (deceased). His second wife is Lyndall Denise English. They married on December 14, 1991.
