Carlos Montemayor finished Universidad National Autonoma de Mexico, from which he obtained Bachelor of Arts in law in 1969 and Bachelor of Arts (Ibero-american letters), Master of Arts (Iberoamerican letters) in 1971. In 1973 he earned Master of Arts (Arabic and Hebrew studies) from El Colegio de Mexico.
Mr. Montemayor served at Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Azcapotzalco Campus, holding the post of a professor of literature and linguistics between 1974 and 1987, coordinator of university extension, 1978-1979, and general director of cultural diffusion, 1979-1982.
He was known to be an author of the poetry collection Poesia 1977-1996, author of the short story collections, several novels, translator. His works are represented in anthologies. Mr. Montemayor was a contributor to periodicals in the United States, including Latin American Literature Today, Denver Quarterly, Beloit Poetry Journal, and TriQuarterly, and to journals in Central and South America and Europe. Besides, Carlos Montemayor worked as an editor in chief for University of Mexico magazine, 1973-1975, and was a founding director of Casa del Tiempo, 1980-1982.
From 1992 till 1996 he occupied the position of a professor of literature and linguistics at El Colegio de Mexico. During 1993-1996 he joined the staff of Instituto Nacional Indigenista as an editorial coordinator of Contemporary Mayan Letters Collection.
Carlos Montemayor had four children: Emilio, Victoria, Alejandra, Jimena.
