Charles Rees Howard Tripp was born on March 8, 1952, in Lui, South Sudan. He is a son of John Peter Tripp and Rosemary Evelyn (Rees Jones) Tripp.
In 1974, Charles received a Bachelor of Arts degree with first-class honors from New College, Oxford. The following year, in 1975, he got a Master of Science degree with distinction from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Later, Tripp continued his education at the same university, graduating with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1984.
In 1979, Tripp began his career at the Imperial War Museum as an interviewer of British service personnel, assigned to the Middle East between 1919 and 1939, a post he held till 1980. During the period from 1981 till 1983, he served as a research associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.
In 1983, Charles was appointed an assistant director of Program for Strategic and International Security Studies at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland, a position he held until 1986, when he began working as a lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. In 1992, Tripp was promoted to the position of a senior lecturer in politics at the same university.
During his career, Tripp has also been acting as a member of the Centre on Conflict, Rights and Justice; London Middle East Institute; Centre for Palestine Studies; Centre for Global Media and Communications and Centre for Cultural, Literary and Postcolonial Studies, all at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
Currently, Charles holds a post of a Professor of Politics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where he also co-founded the Centre for Comparative Political Thought with other colleagues.
Professor Charles Tripp gained prominence as a world class specialist on the Middle East, especially Iraq, and Islamic political thought. He also contributed as a regional expert to media broadcasters, including the BBC and NPR, as well as to print media, such as Foreign Affairs, The Guardian and the New Statesman.
In the run up to the war against Iraq, Professor Tripp was part of a small team, that visited 10 Downing Street, in order to advise the prime minister, Tony Blair, on the consequences of going to war.
