Chi LI was born in 1896, in Chung Hsiang, Hupeh, China.
Chi studied at Harvard University, (United States), graduating with Ph.D. in anthropology.
Since 1929 Chi was a vice-director of the Research Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica, since; he excavated at Anyang, Honan, revealing neolithic villages and towns of the Shang or early Chou Dynasty, which resulted in the Academie des Inscriptions et Belles- Lettres of the Institut de France awarding the cove' ed Julean Prize to the Academia Sinica.
