Mr. Ho Chieh was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong province in 1888.

Mr. Ho studied in the Guangzhou Christian College in 1903-1906; in the Tangshan Railway and Engineering College in 1906-1909 then he went to America in October 1909, after becoming a successful candidate for a government scholarship. He studied mining and metallurgy at the Colorado School of Mines in 1910-1913 and graduated in 1913 with the degree of E. M. (Engineer of Mines).
Mr. Ho took up post-graduate work on Coal and Iron at Lehigh University in 1913-1914 and received the degree of M. S. (Master of Science) in 1914.
Mr. Ho returned to China in August 1914. He was Professor of Mining and Metallurgy at the National University of Peking in 1914-1919, Dean of the Department of Engineering in 1919-1923, concurrently Dean of the Department of Geology in 1919-1924. He also held other concurrent posts, besides those of the National University of Peking, as assistant engineer, Chou Siang Railway, 1917 and professor of mathematics at the University of Communications of Peking in 1923-1924. Mr. Ho was also Dean and Professor of Mining, Pei-Yang University.
Mr. Ho was Member of the American Institute of Mining & Met. Engineers in1913; member of the Association of Chinese & American Engineers in 1920 and of the Geological Society of China in 1922. He was also elected Councillor of tfhe Society in 1924. He was conferred the Fourth Class Chiaho Decoration in 1923.
Mr. Ho also published a number of magazine articles in Chinese on “Gems and Precious Stones”.
