Choun Yamazaki was born on March 22, 1867 in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan.
After learning traditional wood carving techniques from a Buddhist sculptor, Choun Yamazaki moved to Tokyo to become an apprentice to Koun Takamura, one of Japan’s leading sculptors.
Choun Yamazaki came into prominence when his works won prizes at the second art exhibition sponsored by Ministry of Education. Later was appointed judge and remained until the exhibitions were reorganized under his name of Teiten. Choun Yamazaki was a leading figure of Japan Sculptors' Society and a member of Imperial Art Board.
