Having finished high school, Klykov studied at the Kursk Construction College, which he graduated in 1959. Then he worked in industries.
In 1960 he entered the graphic arts department of the Kursk State Pedagogical Institute, where he studied for two years.
In 1962, Klykov entered the sculpture department of the Moscow State Academic Institute of Fine Arts named after Surikov, from which he graduated in 1968 receiving the specialty of a monumental sculptor.
Since 1968 he regularly participated in Moscow, republican, all-union and international exhibitions.
His playful sculptural decor for the Central Musical Theatre for Children (1979) made him famous. His public statue of Sergius of Radonezh in Radonezh (1987) was the first memorial installed in the Soviet Union without permission from the authorities.
In the second half of the 1980s, he turns to Orthodox patriotic themes in his work - Cyril and Methodius on Slavyanskaya Square (1991) and Marshal Zhukov on Manege Square (1995).
He was also an active political figure. In March 1990, he ran for people's deputies of the USSR, but lost to Ponomarev. Since 1990 - President of the International Foundation for Slavic Literature and Culture.
In October 1996 he headed the All-Russian Council Movement. He was a member of the editorial boards of the Den newspaper (1991-1993), the Observer RAU newspaper (1992), was the editor-in-chief of the Derzhava magazine.
In January 2005, he signed an appeal to the Prosecutor General's Office demanding an inspection of Jewish religious organizations for violations of extremism laws - "Letter 5000".
On November 21, 2005, he held a restoration congress of the Union of the Russian People, was elected its chairman.
On the 1996 presidential elections, he supported Zyuganov's candidacy and expressed the hope that Zyuganov and his supporters in the Communist Party 'will eventually come to the idea of a monarchy'.
Since 1969 Klykov was a member of the USSR Union of Artists, havin his works exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum.
Between 1985 and 1987 he was a Member of the Patriotic Association "Memory", since 1989 - a member of the Association of Russian Artists.
In 1995 he became a member of the National Committee of the Derzhava Social-Patriotic Movement for six months, then since December 1996 - a member of the Presidium of Russian Federation.
