Clayton Clay Harvey was born on June 24, 1946, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, United States. He is the son of Harvey Oris and Leola Atkins.
From school age, Harvey loved to read about weapons, cars, and fitness. Although he did not so well at school, he had an outstanding talent for writing. He studied at Methodist College (now Methodist University). He was also studying journalism at Davidson College.
After university, Clay Harvey joined the army, trained in Fort Bragg and Alabama and spent 13 months in Korea. After graduating from Davidson College, he wrote articles on weapons and ammunition and became an expert on various types of weapons for sports and hunting.
His first documentary Popular sporting rifle cartridges was published in 1984 and became a successful entry into a specialized field. Hereafter two more documentaries were published.
In 1996, he released his first thriller A Flash of Red. The book became a bestseller and made Clay Harvey famous. Harvey’s followup novel, A Whisper of Black, picks up the story where A Flash of Red left off. The third book from the series Tyler Vance was published in 2000.
Under the pseudonym Leo Atkins he released his first novel Deadbeat from the Connor Gibs series in 1999. In 2000 two more books from this series were published.
