Clive D. Edwards was born on March 24, 1947, in England. He is the son of Douglas Edwards, a company secretary, and Mary Edwards, a private secretary.
Edwards received his Master of Arts degree in the History of Design from Royal College of Art. He subsequently completed his doctor's degree on Victorian furniture technology at this university in 1992.
Early in his career, Edwards worked in the field of retailing of furniture and interiors.
Concerning his writings, Edwards' works include monographs on aspects of furniture technology, materials and trades, furnishing textiles and the manufacture and retailing of domestic furnishings. He is also a contributor to multi-authored works on interiors, architecture and home furnishings. His interest in the cross-disciplinary study is evident in his work, which includes research on design, materials and technology, consumption, business and retailing.
Nowadays, Edwards is an associate editor for the Journal of Design History and a member of the editorial advisory board for the Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice. Edwards is a current emeritus professor of Design History at Loughborough University.
