Hirano received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Sao Paulo in 1989. She was given a Master of Arts degree in Applied Linguistics from Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo in 2003. In 2011, Eliana earned her Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics and English as a Second Language from Georgia State University.
Hirano began her career as a teacher at Sociedade Brasileira Cultura Inglesa in 1993 and had held the position for seven years. In 2005, she became a graduate teaching assistant at Georgia State University. Then in 2009, Eliana was appointed a language and literacy fellow at the same university.
She served as an adjunct instructor at Berry College from 2011 to 2012. In 2012, Hirano took a position of a visiting assistant professor of teacher education at the college. In 2013, she became an assistant professor at Berry College. Five years later Eliana received a position of an associate professor at that college.
Hirano is married to Jim Mayer. They have a child.
